MMP: The Idol of Comfort

Posted by

Note: Each week we will have a guest writer who will share a few of their personal thoughts on Sunday’s sermon. Unlike Monday Morning Quarterbacking, from which this series gets its name, we aren’t looking to critique so much as share how we have been personally impacted. This week’s post comes from Dave Hallahan.

Today’s sermon was entitled Safe Under Attack and Pastor Mark took us through Psalm 3. This is a Psalm David wrote while under siege from his son, Absalom. Surely, David was under great distress and when the problem he was currently facing is traced back it is clear that David is the cause. Despite this, David’s focus remains on the Lord.

What struck me most was something Mark said while praying before the sermon really started. “We tend to make an idol out of smooth sailing.” So much of our lives are spent worshiping at the altar of comfort. …

Unlike Monday Morning Quarterbacking, from which this series gets its name, we aren’t looking to critique so much as share how we have been personally impacted. This week’s post comes from Al Lewis.

Today’s sermon, “A Wandering World,” covered a few issues pertaining to sexuality and how we, as the church, respond to them. It seems everywhere I look, there is far more conflict than compassion – too much passing of judgement and not enough spreading of the Good News. I was deeply encouraged by the opening remarks of today’s sermon – that members of the LGBTQ community need to hear from our church that they are loved, they are enough, that God gave his son for all people, and that they do not have to change or measure up …

TITLE: Culture vs. God: Who’s Right About Sex?
PASSAGE: Roman 5:12, 7:25; Psalm 145:17; James 1:12-17; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

This week we started what will be a three week look at sexual ethics. Pastor Mark focused this week on the biblical foundations of sexual ethics. This series is certainly a timely one. It is not that our culture is necessarily any more or less off base than previous cultures have been when it comes to this topic. But it would seem that given the technological advancements that we are bombarded with more misinformation and more access to content that pushes a …

TITLE: Wise Connections
PASSAGE: Proverbs 12:18, 25, 15, 26

I don’t know about you but I’m consistently amazed at God’s design in all things.  In 1 Corinthians 12:12 it says “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ”.  We are one body and the parts of the body are designed to function for each other’s benefit as a living and breathing organism should.

In today’s message, the last in the series about the connection we need in our church, Mark illustrated through Proverbs God’s design for our connections in …

MMP: Dry Ground’s Over Here

TITLE: Bold Cause
PASSAGE: Acts 4:18-31

“Only in the together do normal people become bold people. Because only in the together do we have the resources to be reminded of what we believe, but is sometimes hard to remember. Because when you’re in the middle of the storm, you need somebody on dry ground saying, ‘Hey, dry ground’s over here.’ Right?” – Pastor Mark Ott

I guess I just have to come out and say it – there was a time when I hated this time of year. No, I don’t mean the end of summer, back to school, here comes the …
